There's an event that always takes place in an asteroid field, where a mantis ship is fighting a zoltan ship, and you can decide who to side with. I can't remember how the fight proceeds if you side with the zoltan, but siding with the mantis, the following has happened on at least 3 occasions:

First off, I fight a slug ship (not a zoltan one), although this doesn't really matter. Worse, however, is the fact that the asteroids will not hit the enemy ship AT ALL, while they seem to hit my ship with at least twice the normal rate. After killing the slug ship, the asteroids alone could get through double shields and still do hull damage.

Bug or intended? Has anyone else experienced this?

This may be the combination of two issues.

The variability of hit rates in asteroid fields has been seen in other encounters (and might not be a bug); I remember a discussion thread about it, but cannot find it at the moment.
