Unavoidable deaths

While I do like the random nature of FTL in most aspects, nothing is more frustrating than dying from random unavoidable circumstances.
When you enter a new sector and your first jump decision (say down rather than up) determines that you will never be able to reach the exit for that sector before the rebels catch you. This has happened to me a few times now, and 3 times this morning alone. Since you cannot know the entire system there should not be only one route out from your start point.
I feel I have a fair amount of control over how my game plays out, but nothing is more demotivating than having everything going well only to find yourself in a dead end 3 or 4 jumps from the start.
