Problem unlocking the Slug Cruiser (spoilers)

For many people its all about the Crystal Cruiser, but I for one really want the Slug. Each time I stumble across the slug home nebula, I will level sensors all the way just for the chance to get quest start the event. And finally in attempt ~30, I got it, but then somehow derped the quest and I don't know what I did wrong

Here is what I did:
0. level sensors to 3 before entering slug home nebula
1. encounter slug cruiser
2. fight it and make them surrender
3. reject anti bio beam and demand infos
4. get quest beacon for the slug cruiser location. They even said it was for the experimental mobile construction thingy. For me this beacon was in the next sector.
5. go to beacon. Once there I encountered a ship. Since I read you have to fight it, I chose option 2. I beat it but got nothing apart from some scrap and fuel.

Should I have gone with option one? That read more like Id let them escape to me..

You're supposed to first choose the option to tail it, then the blue option to fight the fleeing ship. Otherwise, you only fight its escort, and the real target escapes, IIRC. Then take it down by capturing it, or outright destroy it - either way will work, as long as you do so before it can jump away.

Damn :( I should read the flavor text more closely I guess. thanks for confirming what I already feared/suspected.

I almost got the mantis ship like this, I found kaa-whatshisface, I had medbay, teleporter, sensors, a kick but boarding crew, including several mantis. I hit him with lasers and a beam to hurt his crew, then teleported over and right when his crew was about to die, I noticed that my halberd beam had fired again, I forgot it was on autofire. So I had a paused game, a beam about to smash the ship with two experienced officers onboard. This is when I discovered that turning off a beam mid-firing does not stop it from finishing its arc. Two crew out of 5 and a PERFECT chance to get the mantis ship, wasted. At that point I regequit :P.

Same thing has happened to me more times then I like to admit. I always ragequit then as well, but then come back 5 minutes later because deep down I know that its my own dumb self that is to blame for the fail ^^
