So I saw that you could buy this game on amazon, which I thought was cool, and since I dont have a credit card, I could use my gift certificate money. But then, it immediately sent to a credit card page. I'm a bit disappointed, I have to say. The question is, was this intended by the game company or is it an amazon thing?

I'm not sure, but it may be an "Amazon thing". Notice the button is not a pure Amazon button that would send you to the site buy some article they have in stock (and by the way FTL is not available on Amazon). The button is a button to the "Amazon Payments" service, very much like Paypal or many third-party payment website (typically managed by banks). On those service, you pay (typically by card), and then are sent back to the original website, which receives a confirmation you have paid, and delivers the goods to you. It would be great if Amazon Payments accepted Amazon Gift Certificates, apparently this is not the case.
