I am closing to 100% though I have a few other achievements left as well
Lately I´ve been trying to get the "living off the land" one
The description is:
"Get to sector 8 without buying at a store (Repairs are ok)."
My problem is I run out of fuel. Actually Im not sure if the no-buy rule applies to only systems and weapons or if it also means I cant buy fuel. Please advice.

It is as the achievementdiscription says, you can buy nothing at a store, only get repaired.
So your not allowed to buy fuel, rockets, drones, weapons or systems.
You can however sell stuff at a store.
I would suggest a federationcruiser with their artilerybeam, or a mantiscruiser with a heavy boarding stratagie, or just to quickrun it pumping every bit of scrap in engines hoping you dont run out of fuel.

I recommend Mantis B. That was what I chose and it only took 1 try to get the achievement. Obviously RNG luck was probably on my side a bit, but boarding tends to get you enough fuel in my experience. Also, be sure to buy 6 fuel for 12 scrap when given that option. Also "secure the fuel supply" if you get that event.

I also found that when going for this achievement, accepting surrender when they offer 3+ fuel helped a lot. Obviously you get a lot less scrap, but since you aren't using stores....

The only way to viably get this achievement (which I can think of, as I haven't bothered to try to get it myself) is to manipulate surrenders, because you'll notice that the items that are offered from weakened enemy ships are always different from the items you actually gain from destroying an enemy ship.
If the ship offers fuel, you will not get that fuel if you destroy it.
If the ship does not offer fuel, you will get fuel if you destroy it.
Accept/Reject surrenders accordingly.

I did this achievement with Kestrel B. You only need one new weapon to make you end-game viable. Just hope to get lucky to get that one weapon.

While this was true in prior versions, it is not true in AE. You frequently get LESS fuel but you sometimes get fuel if they offer it and you decline and blow them up.

These statements are flawed, as the rewards for surrender and the rewards for destroying (and/or killing crew) have nothing to do with each other. They are all rolled independently of each other. The most common reward involves two randomly selected resources, plus scrap. It is pure chance if you see fuel in one reward, but not in another.

After this statement was originally made, I paid a lot of attention to rewards in the old version. Either its true, or RNG Loki was in charge of my die rolls.
One of the first things I noticed in beta testing was that this was no longer true.
