In game FTL ship maker

The one thing I would like in this game is a ship maker. Beginning of game you can select custom for a customizable ship. Make it easy with you can choose a few lay outs. Start with like a pool of 30 points and adding in like one human crew member cost 1 point, or a laser version one is 1 point but a laser version two is 2 points, depending on the starting skill of your ship would be a point or so. something like this could make it fast and easy to choose a completely new balanced ship set on a spending limit. Kind of like the custom race in the game endless space would be amazing. Is there anything out like that now or any plans on it?

Nothing that integrated (or limiting), but you should check out the mods section of this forum. There are literally dozens of really interesting designs. Some allow you to blow through the game with no troubles at all. Others pose a mammoth challenge. Still more provide a unique experience that you simply cannot get in the base game.

If you're more interested in building your own ships than playing others', check out SuperLuminal. It lets you build your own ships either from scratch or using someone else's as a base.

You know, this is precisely what the FTL developers intended to do, they actually coded it, this is why in some game files there are mentions of "point" values for ship elements. They beta-tested it, and dropped it, for reasons I don't remember (either it was unfun, or there were difficulties in automatically creating matching enemies, or both, or something else).

I remember that conversation, as I was a part of it :)

It became apparent to them over time that there was simply no set number of points that could build guaranteed (or even semi-) balanced ships every time. Either the ship needed extra to become fair, or was way too overpowered because two things that otherwise were pretty underpowered were - together - overpowered.

Consider the Ion Blast. Alone, it's a poor substitute for a Basic Laser. It'll keep the shield down for a while but once that shield's down it can't do any damage. Add another one and BAM, you can take down any shield eventually, even the final boss'.
