Help colouring a ship

I found out you can mod FTL and I thought it'd be fun to make my own ship (bought this game a few days ago and love it much more than I thought I would).

This is what I have currently. I've drawn it from scratch, and while I think this base is pretty much finished, I would love some assistance. Are there enough '3D-y' bits to make it not look flat? And how do I go about colouring it? I attempted to add colour before I finished the base, but it looked flat/wrong. I'm no artist, so any help would be appreciated.
