Custom Sprite Generator?

I remember when I was modding for Rome:TW they had a sprite generator. You needed a obj model binded to a skeleton and the texture files and it would convert that into animated sprites. (Yes, R:TW used 2d sprites to replace the 3D models when you zoomed out far enough) Was wondering if the developers used this same method for FTL sprites...

I'd say handdrawn lol. It's a 2D game and the images are all clearly pixel art.

there's no 3d in this game whatsoever
