What I would like is:
- access to the Sector Map at any point (without the "Next Sector" option except at the Sector, only as an orientation)
- a mouse-hover indication for each sector in the sector map, showing the type of that sector (Rebel controlled, Mantis HW etc)

This would make hunting for the Crystal Ship a much less frustrating experience without being cheating.
Is this possible to do via modding?

I did look around the forum a bit, but FTL modding seems to be mainly oriented at new ships and events, so I couldn't tell how far it went.

Sadly, neither is possible. The reason why FTL modding is where it is, is because we have an extremely limited field of work; the only things that we can change are ships, events, weapons (limited), drones (limited), sounds and graphics.
Not much more beyond that - everything else is hardcoded.
