Mod to make complete system destruction possible?

This just an idea for other modders, as I sadly don't have the time to work on projects like these anymore. (Heck, I'm supposed to be doing homework right now. lol)

It may be difficult or impossible to mod the game in this way, I'm not sure, but I think it'd be a nice feature. Anyway, my idea was to add the ability to completely destroy systems and subsystems on both yours and enemy ships. I was thinking that it would basically work like reverse Ion damage. Fire or weapons hitting a system after it's been completely broken would slowly add bars to one of the round ion counters (though it would count up and probably not be blue), until it hits a certain number (maybe 5 or so) and then system disappears completely. If you lose a vital system like engines or pilot, then you'll have put on your distress signal and wait for help, similarly to running out of fuel.

This is not possible due to the hardcoded parts of the game.
It is however possible to make systems broken on enemy ships (though that system will be broken for *all* ships while you have the mod running) - drone ships will slowly auto-repair and restore functionality, crewed ships will ignore it.
