Suddenly, Jakes proximity sensor went off, signifying that something was directly in front of him. Directly. As in, three inches away from the glass of his helmet. Yet, he saw nothing. Just his little bubble of light, and the ocean of blackness beyond. The proximity sensor quickly ceased to beep.

"Uh, guys - my proximity alert just went off saying there was something right in front of me. But nothings here. It went away in a few seconds, could just be a malfunction." Jake said into the radio. It was more of a reassurance to himself than a report to the others.

The only sound was his breath muffled in the helmet, and the various beeps from his suit. Eerie, to say the least.

"Maybe you should pull back, if you can't see anything then you won't be able to see anything that could kill you" Bren suggested, showing concern for his leader

"No way am I pulling out now! Lux, Kyrie, C'mon. We should stick together. We're gonna go to the weapons bay to gather all we can on (hopefully) black hole technology." Jake said, motioning for the others to come along.

Suddenly, something grabbed Jake from behind! His feet flew out from under him and he fell to the floor. For some reason, his lights deactivated, his radio link was spontaneously cut, and he was dragged into the blackness, clawing at the floor towards the light from the open shuttle door. It was no use.

He kicked and screamed inside his helmet, but no one was listening as he was dragged into the void.

Kyrie had followed Jake out, looking around at the barely visible walls. She saw a ome almost ripple out of the corner of her eye, but when she looked directly at them, they appeared normal. She looked back at Jake just in time to see his helmet hit the floor and vanish out of sight. "Jake!" She ran forward and straight into a wall. What the fuck..? Kyrie turned and followed the wall, but found another intersection. "Lux can you still hear me?"

"Jake?" Lux asked, sounding nervous "This better not be delayed revenge for that simulator prank..."
She glanced about looking for where Jake had vanished. One second he's there, the next...
"Yes I can hear you..." Lux shouted, panicked as she ran ahead after Kyrie "We should stay close and keep our eyes wide open."

"What's going on out there?" Sarah said into the radio, "Request immediate away-party report from all members, now!"

Jake awoke abruptly, breathing heavily in his suit. The suit had grown cold, conserving power. Jake got up from his position lying on his back, standing in a pitch black room. First things first, he checked the LCD screen on his wrist. O2 recyclers were working, heat systems were working. Everything was OK.

Jake felt around for his helmet light switch. It was in the ON position, so he clicked it off and back on. Nothing. Total blackness. He looked to see if the display readout said anything about the headlamp malfunction, but it had gone pitch black as well. In fact, Jakes internal helmet light began to dim before shutting off.

Now it was total. Utter, complete, all encompassing dark. No LCD screen readout, no headlamp, no internal light. Not even a single LED blinked in the darkness. All Jake could hear was his heavy breathing, as he felt his heart pump faster and faster.

The lights arn't off... He thought. Light just doesn't shine here. It must have to do with the spatial disturbances affecting my light previously. It's just that in this room the effects are most concentrated.

Jake shuffled around the room, his arms stretched out in front of him. He bumped into something, and felt around it with his gloved hands. Unmistakably, a swiveling Captains Chair. He spun it around to face him, and gingerly sat down in the darkness. He pressed the RADIO TALK button, and even though the TALK LED didn't shine, he trusted that the radio was on.

"Hi... It's Jake... I'm in the piloting room... can anyone hear me?" He said, his voice quivering. But then he remembered something from science class. Radio waves are on the electromagnetic spectrum. This means that radio waves are just another form of light. And if light was being counteracted.... "Shit," He said into the radio. They couldn't hear him. No one could.

Jake pondered this for a moment. How much he relied on light. Visible light allowed him to see. Radio-wave light allowed him to communicate. His sensors relied on all spectrums of light, from Infa Red to gamma waves. And with light... all light, gone. What was he to do?

"The human spirit," An audible voice came from behind him! Jake whirled around, of course seeing nothing. "Always craving the new frontier... the next boundary... the unknown..."

"Who... where... How can I talk to you, in a vacumm?" Jake said into the vacuum of emptyness.

"Welcome, Jake." A long pause. "To the unknown,"

Lux tried to contact the Mutare... the Pelican... the Scarab. Nothing.
"Kyrie..." she asked, noting the comms were still working at short range at least (although for how long, she didn't and wouldn't know; she'd probably have to start bumping helmets soon) "I think we've been cut off by the spatial distortions or by some sort of jamming signal. Either one sounds bad."

"I guess we're on our own then." Kyrie moved forward along the wall to Lux. "Visibility seems to just get worse the farther we go." She pushed open a door, but of course couldn't see anything inside. It was like it just dropped off into nothingness. Inching into the room, she could tell the headlamps were basically useless now. Suddenly, there was a blinding light. As her eyes adjusted, she could see she was in a rebel weapons room. There was a guy at the controls putting in something and then darkness again, just as suddenly as it had disappeared. "Wh..what is this?" She felt over to the area the guy was sitting in and found the chair and controls, but no guy. "Lux... I just saw a guy sitting in here."

"I didn't see anything" Lux said, still trying to get the lights to work on her suit "Are you sure you're not seeing ghosts?"
From her perspective, she kept seeing darkness. No blinding light or echoes of time.
At least until she felt something behind her. She quickly turned around and in a flash of light she could see a Rebel soldier. He seemed just as startled as Lux was before darkness returned.
She ran her hands where the soldier was only to feel air. She cleared her throat and paged Kyrie again "Because I'm starting to feel ghosts..."
