Eden facepalmed. "You're supposed to turn off Conference Calling, Luxanna!" she said.
"I did!" Lux protested "I even set it to Tightbeam."
"Then how did he hear your transmission?" Eden asked.
Lux looked at the sensors and noticed... she shut the comms off and headed for the helm "He's moved a bunch of probes between our communications arrays; we can't do ship-to-ship contact without him hearing. We're lucky sound doesn't travel through space so he can't hook up a parabolic microphone probe or something and listen to what we're saying here."
Eden frowned and resumed communication "How about the Rite of..." she made a bunch of very violent clacking sounds as best she could with a Human tongue.
"Ummm..."
"It's a ritual between Mantises. One of their warriors vs one of ours in a fight to the death. The challenged gets to pick who of our crew gets to fight" Eden explained, muting the comms and looking away from the camera to avoid any lip-reading. If Mantises cared to do that.
Lux looked even more nervous. "Don't worry Luxanna. Mantis value a good fight. They'll probably go for like Ruwen or something because he looks more entertaining than just another meatsack..." Eden said.

The mantis clacked a bit and it sounded like he was talking to other mantis with him

"What are the stakes, I presume you wish for our Spacergris, but what do we get if we win, I presume not get shot because you clearly know our ways. Even if you said rite of salad making to us, we understood your point"

"Stakes?" Eden growled angrily "I am challenging your honour as warriors and you dare ask me the stakes?"
She slammed both hands on the console and leaned forward on the camera "You obviously do not know your own culture. If we win, we have the right to acquire what we want due to being the stronger warrior. If we lose... you've killed one of our warriors and your honour is intact."
Stick that up your cloaca and smoke it, she thought to herself. She could see the other Mantis on the ship were getting riled up, The Mantis do not care for individual lives but they do have a sense of honour.
"But if you're too afraid to accept the challenge of a bunch of meatsacks, I'll be sure to let the other hives know about your weakness" she added.

Sarah began an intense scan for Me2KCH4, a chemical nicknames "Spacegris," She picked up trace amounts in the surrounding area, but it would take days to scrape up enough of the stuff to fill a shot glass.
"Not nearly enough," She told Jake, explaining her results to him.

Jake overheard the conversation, and hopped on the comms. "If we lose, you get our ship. This ship." He could hear gasping from the Pelican over the comms.

"Don't worry guys, we're gonna win."

Under normal circumstances I would invite WOL to do the fighting,
since he has the souped-up awesome Engi body. But he seems to be AWOL.

Jake could hear the Mantis snickering over the comms. He had obviously realized by now that most of the crew were mere teenagers.

"We will agree to your fight on one condition. You will fight onboard this ship, not yours. Understand?" Jake asked.

Yeah but I just offered them a ship from 400 years in the future. I doubt they'd pass that up, no matter what the rules may be.

EDIT:

And they most likely belive that they are a shoe-in for this battle anyways.

The mantis talked to each other

"...we give you a counter offer" he said, "3 battles, 1 member from each of your ships vs 3 of our warriors, each victory from you earns a prize" he offered

"Or one battle for the gris VS that fine ship" he offered

He turned his attention to Eden, "As for our Culture, we agree in honor but we also are merchants doing this can cost us workers or warriors, we aren't foolish enough to die for nothing" he said

Eden said to Jake "It's your call... I was going to keep you out of this but you raised the stakes unnecessarily"
Lux wondered just what Eden was getting herself into. Then again she's confident about her own crew winning against the Mantis, she thought to herself.

"Honestly I would be more the nwilling to represent the Scarab" Ruwen said, "If only to help you guys for awakening me" he said on the coms

Gorlag nodded his head, "I'd fight but well...slug VS Mantis doesn't usually go well for the slug"
