And on the subject of the Rogue AI, I was thinking about their origins and why there are so many. Ok, Here goes.
The AI were formerly all part of a giant network known as the Collective, Which raged war against all the organic races of the galaxy, believing themselves superior. (Typical AI background). There can even be several AI stations that were once "Relay" points for the Collective. There can even be a "ruined core" of the collective in a random sector. So the Collective was defeated by underestimating the alien alliance and were destroyed by a rumored "Human-Spider" secret operation. The loss of the collective means that all AI lose communication and turn against everyone, hiding out in an area of space called the "Separation Sector", where no race is willing to go in and clear out the AI, leaving an area between the control of several races similar to Star Trek's Neutral zones.
Story elements out of the way, I was thinking about how store station should operate. They should have at least 1 to 5 "Turret" stations guarding them, And have several store "Systems" Inside of them, Each selling and buying different items, some even selling and buying the same items as another store on the station, but at different rates. If you destroy all the turrets or heavily damage the station, you can take control of it or plunder it. If the reputation system is implemented, if you have something like -75, turrets should immediately target you, or some other stations could give you some free supplies out of fear.
In addition to that, I think that there should be a trading system with stations. Your ship can on default hold 255 scrap, and 4 weapons/drones/augments. You can get ships with additional cargo systems that hold another 4 weapons/drones/augments and 255 scrap for 2 squares, and twice for 4 squares, or reversed. You can collect supplies from stores, and can collect supplies from asteroids floating in space, by flying over to them (in person form, not with the ship) and pressing "Q".
There could be an additional mechanic, where if you jump into another ship, it's a ram. You hear a slamming noise, and then your ship appears very close by the ship you jumped into. You and the other ship receive 8 hull damage and 2 damage to a random system. There could be an augment that reduces the hull damage to you, and increases the damage to the enemy ship.
