Let's try to narrow down the possible culprits.
Sleepy and myself have very different HW specs (laptop, win 8 64b vs pc Linux 32b I believe). Both of us had no issues.
Based on the general error seen in the screenshots and the fact that multiple users with different HW specs reported this issue, I'd like to rule out possible corruptions of the game source files during the SMM patching phase.

Can someone try reinstalling FTL, deleting the SMM backup files, then patching the latest CE version + EL 0.97 and report the results?

Memory: 3072MB RAM (I know, sucks, but if those people (meaning those better than me) can't run it, it probably doesn't matter)

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (6.1, Build 7600)

Graphics Card?: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family (Approx Total Memory: 1324 mb)

No need to be ashamed because of the specs. We aren't on a catwalk here...
Btw, i think it's funny and amazing that nowadays with such tremendous specs, so many ppl are faszinated by such a retro-game. I feel back the days of good ol' "Elite", especially thanks to sleepers mod.

No dice, friend. Several FTLers tried installing EL0.97 with CE1.024/1.206/1.207b and got the same general type crash. Correct me if you got something other then a crash after the load bar fills up at game start, with the 'app had to close due to general error' failure text box.

Done. Same Result. (Reinstalling=fresh new files downloaded via steams function to identify & repair altered files)

Also have tried reinstalling several times plus deleting backups etc. and the same error

I just tried it on my asus ultrabook instead of my desktop and used the gog version of FTL and it works on the ultrabook.
Am using an Asus zenbook UX32VD

Another important question: are you using the latest FTL vanilla install? V1.5.4?

On my desktop FTL should be on the latest version since steam updates it. The version on my laptop which works is from GOG and on 1.5.4
