Is it just me or does the defense drone 2 seem to cause more harm than good on account of it's ability to target lasers? I have shields for dealing with lasers, I don't need the drone being distracted and letting the missiles slip through, possibly even hitting the drone system making the whole thing pointless. Granted, most ships don't have lots of lasers and missiles, always an exception to the rule though. Add on top that it costs four power, severely limiting any other drones you might have wanted to use.

Is there anyone that has extensively used both types, who could offer a more informed opinion on this?

Yeah same experience. Defense Drone 2 is just awful. I will generally sell it just to buy the first one. Thankfully, the drone bay usually comes with a Defense Drone 1, but still, it's just so bad.

It works decently when you have both a Defense Drone 1 and Defense Drone 2 at the same time, but you don't need that defensive investment to beat the game, it's usually a better idea to spend the scrap in weapons or engines. At least in my experience anyways.
