We do not need a save/load feature, but lack of autosave is soooo frustrating. I started playing yesterday, after 2 hours of playing my laptop overheated. Ok, no problem, at least I managed to get a decent sleep

But today it happened again: after I lost one short game at the end of 4th sector, I've had another very nice run. It ended up in overheating my GPU again. No fun... I'll try one or two more times, but probably won't be able to finish the game until autosave is included.
Of course I could exit the game after every few beacons I pass, but that would destroy the smoothness of gameplay.
Soooo, please, please, please provide us a decent autosave and make it an option to satisfy the purists

ok... this is a perfectly reasonable and logical suggestion, who cares how others should play this game or how this game should be played as per (your belief) developer's wishes? Any reason other than dying or manually restart should not destroy your current game/last save, and I doubt that really is a "rouguelike" feature the devs were aiming for.
/rant
I just dedicated two nights of my off hours on this game, then lost several hours of progress because of a crash caused by a background app. Now, the frustration was minor, but no longer able to enjoy the game worry-free was a bigger pain in the butt.
/end rant

Dying? Thats the point.
This is how ALL GAMES WHERE AT SOME POINT and it was done this way on purpose to create challenge.
Having to start over due to a computer glitch isn't the point of the game
would you be mad if the galaga machine turned off and on after like 42 lvls
yeah, i thought so
and your caps + insulting tone require a reponse
YOU ARE AN IDIOT THAT IS MEAN TO PEOPLE FOR NO REASON
YOU THINK A COMPUTER CRASH IS A FEATURE
STFU STFU STFU STFU STFU
JUST STFU
YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT GAMES
IF THIS IS SUCH A GREAT FEATURE TRY IT OUT WITH YOUR BATHTUB AND YOUR TOASTER
this is what you are like; stop being a dick

If crashes are the issue, then perhaps have a hidden autosave (in the vein of word's recovered files, etc).
Saving is just not part of the roguelike genre. You save when you end your gaming session - that is all. Anything else encourages save-scumming, which is the single best way to squeeze all the challenge out of a roguelike.
WE'VE GOT TO STOP THE PEOPLE FROM SPLOITING IN A SINGLE PLAYER GAME
There is already a save feature, making it save your current game status to pick back up on isn't going to effect your play experience anymore than knowing that you can save and quit.
moving around game files and what not to unlock stuff isn't something to worry about unless it effects OTHER players
if it were up to me I'd have a backdoor to unlock everything

The game has a certain flavor and too much hand-holding would ruin it. Arguing that this is a singleplayer game so let people do whatever they want is not a good argument.
That said there's plenty of ways to implement an autosave
without compromising the game's design. Like an autosave that deletes itself when you exit on purpose. You'd still have the crash backup, but it doesn't destroy the hardcore nature of the game. It's exploitable sure, but so is the normal save. You can't argue against a method for out-of-game exploits. That's just unreasonable.

Yeah, this is not a good idea at all, haha. You can edit the save data, though. There's still that.

There is almost no difference between current solution and proper autosave both when it comes to casual game feeling and means to exploit it. EDIT: Please excuse my bad english, I meant usual/normal gameplay here.
Gameplay: Only difference would be that save&quit button would be called quit. For restarting you'd have just 1 'restart' not 3 ('restart', 'quit' and the tempting X button in upper right corner of your window) as it is now.
Exploits: Either way you have to backup your save-files. Actually currently you have more of a leeway for cheating. If you mess up, you can get back to last save at any point of time.

It's not really supposed to feel "casual" though. It's supposed to be hard.
So I think your implementation doesn't really fit.
You are correct in how it should work in theory, though.

In this case, I assume "casual" is being used to describe games that can be paused/restarted at will, not necessarily the difficulty.

I love this game. I've gotten 6 other people to buy this game, and they love it too. They play this game all the time. I can't play this game.
Why? Because in a 3 hour period it is guaranteed to crash at least once, and I lose everything.
Before anyone says "fix your computer"... my PC is fine as far as any other software is concerned. It runs with a week uptime, and only because I know rebooting Windows occasionally is a good idea. Other games? I can run Eve Online, Torchlight, DayZ, etc all day with no problems. If I start FTL, it always crashes eventually. I've only made it to the last sector once, and it crashed then too, in the middle of the boss fight.
I want to be able to enjoy this game, and I do, at least until a crash rips that enjoyment out from under me.
This game needs an autosave. Not incremental saves so you can go back to where ever you want, just the already implemented 'continue.sav', but updated after every encounter.
As it is, if I ever want to attempt at finishing the scenario, I will have to start doing "Save and Quit" > Backup 'continue.sav' > Restart > "Continue" after every encounter. I think everyone would see that as a pain in the ass.
To the people who would say autosave will somehow ruin the game; ruin the game that someone else is playing; ruin the game that someone else is playing on another computer they can't see.. well I really don't know what to say to you (or I'm just being polite). The fact is, given a few more weeks there will be hacks and exploits and savegame exchange networks for this game. And, if what other people are doing with those really bothers you that much, then a simple autosave feature is going to be the least of your worries.
You can play and enjoy this game. Let the people who experience crashes and other issues play and enjoy the game too.
