You may consider flak as a primitive weapon... but wouldn't hurteling balls of plasma (aka burst lasers/ heavy lasers) at low velocities also be considered primitive?
Or using standard missiles that are practically unguided?
In a way, the flak is as low tech as the bombs in FTL.
I wouldn't say the Osprey would have fallen on a failed run.
The deserters seems a more likely story. Or after a quick defeat over a federation sector from the incoming rebels left it unmanned and not captured as possibly A) the rebels didn't notice it. B) rebels already had one and couldn't carry that much back, C) the rebels were short on time nad had to persue the remaining federation units in the area.
Which is not that unlikely of a story at all. the Panzerkampfwagen VII "Maus" is the largest tank in history. Using a sub- naval gun used on battleships as it's main gun on a turret. Using ANOTHER anti tank gun as a coaxial gun instead of a machine gun. and using Naval breaches and such to prevent shrapnel, fire,l or water going from 1 end of the tank to the other when it is under fire, on fire, or under water as this thing was so heavy normal bridges won't hold it up and it was designed to go underwater through the river instead. This tank was one of the oddest tanks in history that was actually built and was going to be used until it was captured with no crew inside. One was captured and investigated and researched by the western allies while the other one was somehow not deemed valuable and was used as TARGET PRACTICE.
Using this WWII story as it makes sense on how the rebels got the ship in 1 piece. how they got 1 of Fed Cruisers and possibly left the other one alone. Thus pirate looters after the raids came in and took it.
I would doubt the Flak cannons use on the Fed C is a downgrade or a last resort. if it was it would make more sense as a different beam weapon, or a missile. As mentioned earlier flak is rather held as a higher end weapon due to the main races that use them as well as other features such as it's rarity and it's price compared to other contemporary weapons. It also has a nice spread affect which would give it lots of merit and usability over say a laser and it is devastation to shields. It's one of the only weapons that can do this.
Either way it is no ordinary pirates that got this ship, they are quite wealthy. we can see this due to the quality of the paint- they painted the entire ship in black first and then with the unique red paint afterwards. Covering the ship 100% in the paint instead of the pirates regular 30 to 60%
We got a unique possibly high end weapon
We got a Federation prototype Cruiser
We got a unique pirate faction.
These 3 factors say something. Rather that be former federation crew deserters, successful pirates that is not named Tuco, or a random match of luck...
We also have to mention that this ship also carry zoltan, mantis, and a human on it at the start and it comes with a clone bay... It also lacks any normal weapons which is odd for any pirate ship in FTL. Regardless of na artillery system or not.
Also it's not exactly civilians that are associated with Green with Yellow stripes. it all started with FTL: Captains Edition which used it as the Militias paint scheme which used former federation ships for there forces (which makes sense slightly on how they got the fed cruiser). The militia in another view is the 'peoples army'. so civilians would heavily use this as well.
Due to the fact that people want to perceive Captains Edition as a fannon they want to stick to it strictly to create an expanded universe of lore in the FTL community so things click in nicely.
This is also the only human skin we know that is neither federation or rebel that isn't a pirate. So the only skin that isn't a friend or foe is considered neutral.
To be honest we do not have any lore that is cannon what so ever on the....
Engi B "Red" / "Rust" skin.
Engi C "Chrome" Science skin
Rock B "Black" skin
Mantis B "Blue" skin
Mantis C skin
Slug B "Bicolour" skin
Slug C "Yellow" skin
Fed Cruiser B "Green" skin
Fed Cruiser C "black" skin
Stealth A, B, and C skin
crystal B "Crimson" skin
Lanius B "red" skin
etc... so there is lots of area to work up on lore in fannon. not to mention that there is also the civilian/ outer nebula Slug "Blue" skin from alpha/ beta, the rebels "white and orange" skin from alpha and beta, etc also thrown into the mix.
