Re: I don't get it
Thanks for all the feedback. I'm feeling really oldschoolish getting advice from other people and not having looked it up on a wiki already.
I just unlocked that stealthy ship and actually got to the last boss. Went for the oxygen strategy which turned out horribly bad!
Take care lads
Funny story, I bet $50 with a classmate who could complete nethack first.. Man we were killing that game as graduation started to turn up!

Take care lads
I am 100% with you at that one. I can play almost without spoilers these days during the nethack phases but you'll never want to play completely without it.Icehawk78 wrote:To be fair, I can't even imagine attempting to play Nethack without spoilers, and I've ascended thrice.

Bombing the mantis bases comes to mind for me. It nets you -1 missile and you inly get regular fight rewards. Better to just white option attack imo.Icehawk78 wrote:Almost always. Ok where to start, Raikao, your comments repeatedly state that you are simply providing your opinion and others are hating on you for it.
First of all you are the one person on this forum that has invoked personal insults on others more than anyone else (except for the random guy abusing caps lock).
Secondly, don't use "lol" or any variant of it in this kind of conversation. you used it at least twice. lol makes you sound stupid unless it is used in a lighthearted conversation.
Thirdly one of the reasons you are being hated on is because you are complaining about features of the game that the majority do not find faulty. I hate to invoke majority rules but it would be a bad decision on the developers part to change the game the way you want it to change. Your providing an opinion. they are providing theirs. you are not wrong for stating your opinion, but neither are they.
And lastly you do not win the game "1 in 20" or "1 in 100" times. the game is NOWHERE NEAR that hard. I would agree with you if you were complaining about how hard it is to unlock the unidentified ship. THAT would be 1 in 20 or 1 in 100.
The first time i ever played the game i unlocked the engi cruiser. I died shortly afterwards. the very second play through I used the engi cruiser and this time I won. Second play through, I won. What's more is I unlocked the stealth cruiser in that play through. From that point on I won 60-70% of my games with the stealth ship. I have come very close to winning with the federation cruiser many times, but never won. I used the stealth to unlock everything but the unidentified cruiser, which I used rock B to unlock (took me a week of intense gaming)
The point I'm trying to make is that the reason I did so well is not because I have some sort of ninja skill, nor is it that I just lucked out. It is because the GAME. IS. NOT. HARD. If you disagree feel free to tell me your overall game strategy, and I'll tell you mine and we'll compare. It'll be far more constructive than the pointless bickering I've seen so far (it's has gone way off track, the majority of comments are aimed at each other rather than the game.)

I use 'lol' in conversations with my boss at work - it's just shorthand for breaking up the tension of something in a medium that can't provide things like "tone" and "body language" and the like. It doesn't make you sound stupid (to everyone - obviously, it does to you but not to everyone as a whole), and it provides a way to express something that doesn't easily translate to text.

Nice acronym, but the best acronym has to be this one.Icehawk78 wrote: This off-topic rant provided to you by Supporters of Lolling in Discussions (SOLID), which was conveniently invented by me, right now.

Touche... I just find it difficult to take him seriously when he uses it. believe it or not he does have some valid points, I just think the whole argument would be more productive if we aimed it at the game rather than each other. It's the same deal on every forum I go to. His "Angry Video Game Nerd"-esque description of boarding technique among other things just riles everybody up (not to say I don't like the angry video game nerd, he has one important factor that makes him successful: he knows what he's talking about) and then he uses "lol" which in this case doesn't serve the purpose of breaking the tension, it just degrades the other posters, treating them like their opinions are laughable.Icehawk78 wrote:lol, this point is a silly point to makejonathino001 wrote:Secondly, don't use "lol" or any variant of it in this kind of conversation. you used it at least twice. lol makes you sound stupid unless it is used in a lighthearted conversation.

now THIS is the correct use of lol.Icehawk78 wrote:Lol, okay. Not really anything to do with what I'm talking about, but I'll go ahead and agree and retract the single sentence I said about Yahtzeejamotide wrote:I want to add the same thing nfiae said about Yahtzee, there is lots of skill involved, knowing what dice to reroll, where to put them in etc. Just because noobs like my grandpa dont know that, doesnt make it random!

Re: I don't get it
I suspect you're missing out a bunch of the possible strategies that can come up in the game. Several are easier to try with ships other than the starting ship, but nonetheless: you really do have a lot of opportunity to direct your own fate. For example, at an early store you could sell one of your initial weapons or augments to get a drone system, or a crew teleporter. I note that you mention purchasing missiles: it might be worth trying selling your missile launcher and buying a laser or ion weapon. Or just limit your missile firings to once or twice per combat.Timmy wrote:but even on more normal runs, while there is some illusion of choice, the truth still remains that, between all the hull repairs fuel and missile purchases, there really are not that many decisions I can make. There is no "play style" of my own that I can develop or apply - I can just try and play the cards the game dealt me right, in order to survive one more sector.
Basically, there's a startling amount of choices involved in playing the game that might not be at all obvious on your first few playthroughs.
(75 hours according to Steam, and counting...)
Many years ago I created the FTL Starcraft mod: 18 new challenging ships to fly through the FTL universe!, and wrote a tutorial on creating your own FTL ships. They haven't been updated for AE though.

Re: I don't get it

Every single thing in the game is a dice roll, just like Monopoly... If you land on Boardwalk and take a loan to buy it, and the dice rolls make people land on it and you make a lot of money, it was a good deal. If they dice rolls make people not land on it, it was a bad deal.
Every weapon shot, every dodge, every choice you make in this game other than how to maximize your chances of winning is a roll of the dice. It's called "RANDOM". Get it?

This is the best tabletop board game ever in the world on a computer. Except have have to find other people to play Chess, Risk, or Spades. (Settlers of Katan anyone?)
