Also, the path to the FTL folder is the ftldat folder, correct?
No, it is the folder FTL was installed in.
In the black n white promt you have to type:
cd is the Change Directory command, followed by a space and the the full path. Usually C:\Program Files\FTL or something, i really dont know where the game was installed on your PC. The files you are trying to unpack are in the resources folder inside the FTL folder. The only reason i cant give you the exact command to type is that i dont know where FTL is installed

You have to find out. Try finding it in explorer, the first place i'd look is in Program Files.

Thanks for all your help, I finally got it to work (since i downloaded the game through steam it was in my steam\steamapps\common folder).
Would it be ok if I posted links to the art here for others to use if its credited appropriately?
EDIT: Actually, on closer inspection it appears the backgrounds for FTL are comprised of a set of generic backgrounds with randomized planets overlayed on top. A bit disappointing as it means i'll have to reconstruct them myself, but it does make me appreciate them a bit more.

I don't think so. This is crossing the line between fair use (do what you want on your computer with the files that were installed) and unauthorized distribution (the devs have said they do not want to see their art distributed by other people).

No, that would not be ok. Using a mod tool to unpack files is ok. It's your game and you can try modding it and changing it and so on, but sharing or distributing either the unpacked files or work based on those files on the internet is not ok.
I understand you probably want to make it more convenient for others, but that would be against the rules. Certain parts of the game can be modded and distributed but only those that do not include any of the copyrighted material. Anyone that wants to unpack files can use the tools available on the forum and do so for their own personal use.

I use a Mac to play FTL, and would really like the Artwork from the game as well. Does anyone know of a way I can get a hold of them through my mac? I do have a PC that runs windos 7, but it does not have FTL installed, and I have no programming or coding knowledge to even know where to begin "unpacking" the game.
