If your only goal is to achieve The United Federation, maybe think about using a non-boarding strategy. Particularly if you find that using a boarding strategy is frustrating you. To get UF, your ship doesn't have to be good enough to beat the boss, just good enough to survive.

But really, if your goal is to unlock the Redtail, UF is the hardest of the three achievements. It's the one that's the most luck-dependent, because it depends on five separate events / purchases. Full Arsenal only depends on three. Tough Little Ship depends on one, plus controlling your damage level.

Yeah, full arsenal isn't hard to get if you make an effort to keep some scrap on hand for when you see shops, and tough little ship is easy to do if you devote yourself to doing so deliberately. You can save up enough scrap to full repair, then hang out in an asteroid field or solar flare next to a shop until you are down to 1 health, or even find an enemy with only one weapon, then once your ftl is fully charged let it hit you until you are down to one health then jump away.
