Has to be a mix-up between Sekkrit B and Rock-B. The Rock-B has a heavy laser that pierces shields and a fire bomb, which is quite nice. Also, you get enough super-strong rock dudes to just man everything at the start.

I really like Slug-A. You can get massive scrap advantage early on by wiping enemy crew every battle.

Mantis Gila Monster cruiser. Have all critical weapons for survival from the start and good starting crew. Bomb for destroying medbays, laser for penetrating zoltan shields.Basilisk is good too but you can really hit a wall at the start with zoltan ships.

Red-tail. Why has no one said the Red-tail? Four starting crew, including a Zoltan and a Mantis. Med bay right next to teleporter (after it's bought). Starts with four weapon points. Easy to repair layout. It's just so... easy.

I said the kestrel! I kind of lump them together. I do think the red-tail is a hard upgrade. So maybe I should change my vote.

Right now I'm very close to winning the game for the first time using a VERY lucky Red-Tail that also unlocked the Gila Monster and the Zoltan cruiser whose name I don't remember.
So until I get time to try out these new ships, my vote goes to the Red-Tail :

The halberd is an amazing weapon that can one shot a lot of ships in the first two sectors and if you have missiles to burn you can one shot pretty much every thing and still have an impressive offensive ability into sector 4-5.
The zoltan shield gives you an absurd amount of defense effectively letting you ignore the first volly early on save you scrap on repairs and later when your evasion is better it can last you 2-3 rounds if you use stealth. It does get eaten pretty fast against drones but for how strong it is it needs some weaknesses. Its also great for preventing early boarding giving you time to take out their transporter or out right kill them.
