I find the best use of hull repair drone is to hold it in your cargo bay as reserve, for between-fight patchups.
My favorite drone combinations have been 1 defense mk 1 + 1 defense mk 2 or alternatively 3 attack mk 1. I could see mixing in some beam drones could be useful if you get a lot of ion weapons.
