Pickup is random I think, the important part is that you need to get to the Zoltan homeworld with the pod, and after that to the rock homeworld. Which doesn't happen that often

Some additional tips.
- A ship with a small teleporter (2 spaces) can still recall a four man(tis) team all at once as long as all four members are in the same room on the enemy ship. With an upgraded teleporter, this lets you send in a two man team followed by a second 10 seconds later and then pull them all out at the same time.
- Don't be overly aggressive in terms of how low you let your team's health go, especially if they enemy has missiles or you're fighting in an asteroid field or near a sun. A stray hit on the room your injured members are in while passing through to the medbay can kill them if they are too low on health.
- Super shields (the ones with a healthbar in addition to dots) can't be teleported through until the heath bar is worn down.
My favorite tactic is to have two two-mantis teams that beam in asap while my weapons take out the medbay. Have your team disable the weapons and/or shield. Once you have high level shields, you really only need to worry about their weapons if they have missiles. It's important to let them shoot at you so your pilot and engineer can build their dodge skills.
Admittedly, I haven't tried it on normal.

I just started using boarding tactics in combat. They are pretty op if you can get a fire bomb and some rocks. My tactic is to drop a bomb in the medbay then send my rocks into it. The enemy crew wont stand a chance against two rocks in a burning room even if its the medbay (which ends up non functional after a short period). Once the medbay is down you can mop up the crew with ease. If there is no medbay or the weapons are enough to pierce my shields I will take out the weapon system first.
If you get a defense drone and decent shields you are basically untouchable.

I made a small boarding video, gameplay only. Just to illustrate some concepts, sadly I don't have any video editing skills.
In the beginning I'm targeting a bomb on the helm, actually to hit the guy sitting there, but he changes room in the meantime

Starting 0:08 I want to switch the positions of my fighters, else the mantis will kill my slug. I fail, don't ask me why, the real shuffle starts at .20 then

I'm starting from a situation where their weapons are destroyed, by fighting I keep them down. It also shows you can board effectively with only 3 crewmembers, and with a suboptimal boarding party.
