Thanks for the comments TWS.
I reckon Sleepy will work on the descriptions of the "exotic" weapons.
Any more ideas?

How about having breaching shots with a bright, 'energetic' core?

EDIT:
How about having breaching shots with a bright, 'energetic' core?

An energetic core seems like it would be more for fire weapons. I think breaching shots should look very focused and small, like a bunch of energy is impacting the hull in a small area.

The top shot looks very "sickly", the green one looks cool too, but maybe not "sickly" vomit color enough.
I don't know how much my input would be of help. All I can say is try and stick to the current color scheme.
I would think that the darker "Rock like" colors would be fire weapons.
Green should be pierce or hull damaging
Blue of course should be ion
Yellowish should be crew damaging
Etc...
Anything optimized or advanced should be lighter colors white/ivoryish
Anything rusty old or jammed should be brown
You could add some new colors like orange and purple into the color scheme though.
Orange maybe could fire and red could be increased damage for example
Purple could be system disrupting perhaps?

Scaling animation into smaller sizes results in poor images. Lets concentrate more on the color scheme for the time being...

Ooooh. I like it. You're right they are slug like. I just think we should make use of all colors. I think purple is ok for system damage because in the AE it stands for hacking. The orange weapons should maybe have more of an orange glow though.

Oooooh. Now that is very, orangey! The rusty ones look nice too. Great job! I'm going to plug your thread another time in the CE thread so more people will hopefully give you feedback.

Not too keen on that textured look.. the application of the texture is inconsistent across all its frames, so it's going to look really awkward when in-use.
