The Zoltan A, a 5 strength extra shield is awesome. And I do like the strenth 2 beam, usually rips anything until sector 3 if I also upgrade so I have missiles at the same time or find a simple gun.

Kestrel B - The first ship i had beaten the Boss on normal mode.

The 4 Lasers give you the advantage to fire at every system, in the end i was fitting fire bombs and Pegasus rocket to board with rockmen, board his shields and set the rooms on fire.

Pegasus was destroying his systems, even in stage 2 - the drone can just shoot down 1 of 2 missiles.

The constant fire of the lvl 1 lasers were doing the rest. With no use of reactor.

Having only the normal one, the Federation + it's variation, the Engi cruiser + it's variation and the stealth cruiser, I'd definitely say that the Federation-B cruiser is my favourite. Starts with two power on it's weapons, and also start with a Zoltan and a Slug, meaning you won't have to upgrade power or sensors as much. And if you upgrade your shields/engine a bit, and maybe get a missile defense drone, you can just stand still and wait for the artillery beam to wreck the enemies. Greatest weakness is of course, ships who try to escape, but those usually aren't a huge problem. Plus, in the end-game, having a fully shield-piercing weapon is amazing against those stone wall-ships with 4 shields, and extremely useful against the boss, and the first time I beat the boss on normal was with the Federation Cruiser B, ironically enough. I love the Stealth Cruiser as well, considering you can, after upgrading your engines a few time, dodge literally every shot fired at you while you're cloaking, and fully upgraded cloak system combined with the augment that lets you fire while in stealth without disrupting your cloak just means you're basically invincible for 15 seconds and you can just wreck them while you're doing so. Also bloody amazing against the last phase of the end boss, as you can just dodge his power surge.

I've only unlocked Kestrel-B, Engi and Zoltan.

Of those I really like the Kestrel-B; but the best I'd say is the Zoltan ship. It comes with the Zoltan Shield and crew, powerful starting weapons, and the only drawback is a low reactor, which if you're not going for the achievement, is easily upgraded.

even tho u dont have any shield besides your zoltan one you get 2 ion weapons which is enough to disable the enemy's shields and then weapons before you shred them with your beam

Not the "best" I'm sure but of the ships I've acquired, I have the most fun playing with Slug A.

I'd say the most "safe" ship is Torus A. You cannot really lose with this one, because you start with both weapons and drones, and you have a weapon that will penetrate ANY amount of shields eventually, unlike other ships, where you will eventually hit a wall where you cannot penetrate enemy shields if you didnt get weapon upgrades.

The most powerful ship i'd say is Kestrel A, just because Burst II is THE best weapon in the game. If you ever get four of those, boss will be no threat at all (wouldnt live to do his power surge probably). And it has no inheritent disadvantages, like no medbay on slug ship, or wierd medbay placement on Stealth B, or having to pay both for shields AND cloak on Zoltan ships, or no doors on Rock B, etc.

Runner-up for me is Stealth A (very good Dual Laser weapon and very powerful for its 1 energy cost beam, this ship can deal 6 damage with its starting weapons for only 2 energy used, which is insane)

And of course Zoltan A / B (halberd beam is single-handedly winning fights for you with ease until you find something better, if you dont you have backup plan in Leto launcher to carry you until you do, and two Ion I work the same as Ion II, so those and a pike beam are also a good start, pike beam dealing massive damage but not so good at disabling highly upgraded systems)

I dont like federation cruiser much (random slow pike beam that can fail to do any real damage but costs lots of scrap and 4 energy to power?...), i dont like having 4 basic lasers at start, because they are not even good enough to sell, and they will eventually have to go, i dont like Torus B wierd gameplay, and havent unlocked any other ships yet, but from what i've read, crystal ship may be fun, Mantis is random-dependant, Rock i dont like to spend missiles that much, Slug B no medbay is a huge disadvantage (each heal costs a missile), .
