Implement Steamworks, achievements and statistics on Steam

Postby Fred » Sat Oct 20, 2012 8:34 pm

I really wonder why this has not been implemented on Steam, it is such a simple thing to do. Not only that, it is also free, it costs you nothing as a developer to implement it into your game, there are no royalty fees to pay.

I would like things like these to be available in the same manner for FTL: Faster Than Light:

Justin and Matthew said during development that they weren't able to get the Steam API to play nice with the game, so they didn't include it. Not sure if it's coming in the future, but that's why. They tried, it just didn't work like they wanted.

It also has an ongoing cost of maintaining two code bases: the Steam-integrated and non-Steam versions. Remember, there are a lot of us who eschew the Steam pox.

FTL achievements have 3 states, while Steam ones have only 2:
- Steam: locked/unlocked.
- FLT: locked/unlocked on Easy/unlocked on Normal

It means that each achievement can be unlocked twice, which is not possible on Steam.
This adds a ton of replayability, because you can do everything on Easy and then do the SAME on Normal again.
Briliant, too bad Steam is not that advanced.

A bit subjective, because if you played on Normal from the start, you technically get both unlocks, and there's no point in going backward to play the game again on Easy.

On Killing Floor you can finish each map on four difficulties, Normal, Hard, Suicidal and Hell on Earth. For each difficulty, on each map, there is a separate achievement.

Why can FTL: Faster Than Light not solve this in the same manner? Beside this, I also do not really enjoy having to unlock generic achievements on different difficulty modes.

Exactly because of this:

If you're good enough to start from Normal, would you ever care to step down and unlock Easy?
You'll have to either live with 1/2 of achievements locked or get bored to death by grinding below your capabilities.

The FTL way is best of both words. "Easy" players get the achievements, while retaining the incentive to do it again on harder diff. Normal players get "2 for the price of 1". Everyone's happy.

Nothing prevents giving players multiple achievements at once, ie. giving both easy and normal achievements if you do it on normal.
