iPad FTL crashing, all up to date

Game version 1.6.17
iOS version 9.3.5 (latest version for this model A1395 iPad 2)
8 GB free, no other apps running
No sideloading or jailbreaking
Straight vanilla App Store download
FTL for iPad crashes shortly after starting up. It’ll crash on the hangar, when jumping, and during a battle.
Usually the crash is after a (any) button click but that could be coincidental, since it will also crash when idling in pause. The game always crashes at some point within ten minutes of play.
Resetting or hard power-down doesn’t help.
This happens in Airplane Mode as well (to test if Game Center is involved), with sound and/or music turned completely off in menus (to test sound system).
I was looking forward to playing this and getting some use out of my old big screen iPad.
