Error watched as the flashing lights of FTL-Transit faded and the Rock cargo ship dropped into ordinary space. He stared out the window, manipulating the Engi nano-cells in his eyes to create a higher definition image.
He saw a battered, broken down ship a little ways off, drifting calmly in open sky. This patched-up, scarred and steaming stealth ship was the best candidate for the Galaxies first-contact flagship? First-Contact with an advanced, hostile species? Error counted two, no, three visible hull breaches. This
was the galaxies best? "Zzzzzzaaaaaulllllggggg..." Error made an Engi-beep of disgust.
Suddenly, a flash of light appeared quite close to the window causing the Rock cargo-ship to shudder a little. Another ship had just dropped out of FTL, its brilliant-orange color unmistakable. "Re-bels." Error stammered, slinking away into the darkness of the engine room. The Rebel ship, too, was battered and bruised- full of scars from the long forgotten Federation-Rebel war. Not forgotten enough
Error thought, thinking back to the instruments and probes of the Rebel science facility so many years ago. How they scrambled his software to the point where even other Engi could not repair it. Every time this memory came back to him, he thought of an ancient Human nursery rhyme:
"Humpty-dumpy sat on a wall.
Humpty-dumpty was captured by Rebels.
All of the Engi and all of their tests,
couldn't put Humpty's base-code back together again!"
At least, that's how he thought
it went. Error slid through the darkness, preparing the engines for an FTL jump.
