The ion weapons are not bad, I never said that. But the Ion Mark 2 is the only one that works as *sole* ion weapon.
If you already have an ion weapon by any means get a second one. Ion is a good setup. You just need more than 1 weapon to actually whittle down shields. And getting a second one after buying the first one with fingers crossed is indeed luck.
