Doors Are Important!
A lot of people that i see or heard play FTL barely even bother with doors, yet they are extremely important! Fires cause major hell when not under control, if you upgrade doors all the way fires won't budge! Boarders that board your ships are pretty nasty when you have a weak crew. With doors you can trap them for a long time. Maybe even flushing them out into space. Oh, and if you don't want your crew to tend to the fire you can just flush it out into space without it spreading if you upgrade your doors. It makes boarders harder to reach your crew. All in all I think that doors are important. (My personal opinion)

Doors are some thing I upgrade early and always max. Can easily make boarding parties trivial to deal with.

There are very few times not to get Doors level 2 (such as Rock type B), it's absolutely crucial for so many reasons.
Doors 3 depends more on your particular playthrough. If you're short of crew or have weak crew or have a bad ship layout, then level 3 can be amazing. Otherwise, it's not a high priority.

I always aim for door 2 by the end of sector 2. being able to asphrix and control the movemnt pf borders is just too useful not to get it.
I didn't realise they don't use up reactor power either.
As an added bonus, upgrading any system to level two means the system can soack more damage before hitting the hull or going down entirely.

Unless I'm running a boarder heavy crew, I almost always grab doors 3 ASAP. The ease of suffocating enemy boarders is easy as hell with doors 3. Pretty much the only time I don't bother is with Crystal ships, and that's only because the lockdown ability can barricade doors.

Before hitting the hull is only true for boarders destroying a system. A laser shot that hits a subsystem will still also do hull damage, unless you have the Rock Plating augment.

I -never- bother with upgrading my doors. You can vent the fires out either way, and I know enough about boarder AI not to need anything better than basic door controls.

Doors lvl 2 is not enough to asphyxiate boarders. They will pry open the next door and keep making a mess. Imho boarers should be treated with speed, more than strategy. I still buy doors lvl 2 to deal with fires more easily.
