I was boarding a ship and left it with 1 hull left. As I was killing off crew, the ship blew up on its own (taking my fellow with it).

Can fires cause hull damage? I wasn't firing any weapons... made sure to turn those off.

Yes, fires can cause hull damage, if they damage a system enough.

Fires will cause 1 hull damage when they destroy a system

Your boarding crew will also cause hull damage when they destroy systems
