damaging an ionized system cause hull damage?

Hello, I just lost my two engi crewmembers because I boarded nearly dead ship and after few seconds it suddendly blew up! I was attacking a non damaged weapons system which was ionized. Did the ship get hull damage when I damaged the weapons system (not destroyed it!) or was there somewhere a fire which I did not notice?
