Unlocking the steath ship using engi cruiser. Help required

So I'm trying to get the stealth cruiser using the engi cruiser reason being it's the only 100% guarantee of having engi in my crew.

I get the quest started and I find the first ship I power up my ion and drone and start focusing my ion attacks on his engine and letting the drone do his thing.

As my luck usually holds out the random number generator decides that it wants to repay me for all those times I get perfect hits in a row. Half the shots miss and get away.

Should I try it again with the kestrel? or stay with the engi?

Is it even possible to do with the engi crusier?

Might be harder with the the Torus, unless you can find a beam or missile weapon. I used the Kestrel. I sent a couple of missiles(missed once) to take out the shields, and focused my burst laser on the engine.

Still, getting the Engi can be as hard than getting a laser/missile. Though may be cheaper.

I managed it, but only barely. I didn't even have any proper weapons: Just the ion cannon and the anti-ship drone.
I wasn't really searching for it, I just go lucky. The first ship got away, but I managed to defeat the second one and complete the quest before my ship got destroyed.
I just spammed their shields with the ion cannon until my drone could get through. It's not the most effective way of doing it, but it worked.
I've never tried the quest with the Kestrel.

I got it using the Kestrel B-layout, just hit the engines and helm with some laser fire, then ripped the rest of the ship up and hit the engines when they tried to fix it, but of course the problem is the kestrel has no 100% chance for an engi, though they are fairly easy to find, though maybe it was just a lucky run as I also got the mantis cruiser on that run? Personally, I'd say kestrel or a ship that has a weapon/s that do damage as you can aim at the engines and helm rather then hoping the drone will hit there.

I used the engi. I had the best run ever though a anti ship 1 a defense 1 and a hull repair bot and like 6 people so it is possible. OOH! and I had a beam cannon. That made it easy. 2 shields too.
