Without shields you simply can't win since no matter how fast you act the enemy will be able to fire at least one salvo and beams at you, and if they all hit you are pretty much toast before you can say "I regret this".
I usually only get 3 shields. 4 shields is a luxury.
I haven't tested with 0 shield, but with 1 I've done it quite a few times without being hit too much. Weapon pre-igniter, +50% evasion and cloack are a must. Most times I haven't used defense drones. Just ion-bomb the boss shields and board + fire his weapons ASAP. The more dangerous weapons (destroy first) if you don't have shields are laser bursts, so aim for them. The missiles would hit you anyway if you had full shields.
