Just a quick one:
HOw is it, that the auto scout has survived _this_ long, only to pop mere seconds after I ftl in.
"IT WASN'T ACTIVATED" I hear you cry. Some are already active!
Granted a cheeky laser to the cockpit doesn't help matters for them, but I didn't get to captain mucking about targeting empty hull sections!

Yeah that one always confused me. When I run on a ship that can't do any damage (The Mantis... B is it?) I laugh when I see these. I just sit and wait for them to die.
Also the Rocks who sit next to suns, and then totally fail to effectively control the fires raging on their ship.

Another one that confused me was the Zoltan asteroid guards who somehow have a full Zoltan shield even though once the fight starts it'll be destroyed in a matter of seconds due to the pelting.

Before you FTL in, the auto ship and zoltan ships are parked on a big asteriod. Like the Mellinium Falcon in Starwars. Once the battle is joined, the ships leave the safety of the asteroid and start flying among the rocks. Potentially colliding into them.
Not strange at all.

Because it's hilarious.
Does anyone know if it's possible to mod this so it never happens? I'm not sure if asteroid fields have their own lists for ships or not.

What about all these enemy ships just chilling out next to the sun? Droneships make sense, since they are unaffected. But other ships? Particularly how few have a medbay?
Are they having a tailgate party out there? Barbecuing spacepony meat hotdogs?

Re: Non-shielded auto scouts in asteroid fields.
Around the unstable sun, the pirate ship fired it's thruster and turned it's engine where the shielding is highest directly at the sun. 'maintain position' the captain ordered. When the flare came, the thick shielding of the engine block most of the harmful radiation from the crew.
Engines are fierce furnaces where nuclear reactions are generated. A thick shielding between the engine output and the crew sections exist to protect the crew from the tremendous radiation. The captain was just using it to protect the crew including the engine control room from the solar flare when he positioned the ship to face away from the sun.
Note the difference between the engine control room and the engines itself. The crew can go into the engine control room but not the engines themselves. Nobody will survive the trip. Not even rock men.
When the enemy ftl in, the ship starts to take evasive action. Station keeping to avoid flare is impossible when someone is shooting missiles and beams and lasers at you. Not if you want to survive.
No barbecue here. And use some imagination and space lore next time.
