When a system goes to red, it inflicts 1 point of hull damage. I don't know if this happens if the system is destroyed due to weapons damage, but it definitely happens if the system burns up or is destroyed by boarders. Upgrading the cockpit is only really worthwhile as a hedge against it getting destroyed. The bio beam is a pretty crap way to kill crew, though. Sending crewmembers over is much faster, which means you get shot at less (assuming you haven't managed to disable their weapons). I noticed the same thing with the Basilisk (Mantis B ship) -- both my crew were on the enemy ship, but I figured I could still use the cloak to dodge incoming shots. It didn't seem to work. Of course, I might have gotten unlucky -- 60% evasion isn't foolproof -- but it was still pretty disappointing...

Assuming your weapons fire in salvos, the weapon that benefits most from improved reload time is the one that's holding up your salvo -- the one with the slowest charge time. All this talk about DPS ignores the fact that you generally don't fire your weapons out of sync, excepting missile/bomb weapo...

I'm still partial to the idea that defensive drones should be able to attack offensive beam/laser drones as well as missiles/asteroids though, anyone have thoughts on this?
