Auto-pilot does have one blue option, though it's rareish. At the second dot it opens up an option to safely pilot through a scrap field in an ion storm to look for stuff. I have no idea how you're this unlucky, I almost always hit the rock homeworlds at some point. (Mostly for rock plating if I have an empty slot.

I'd prefer that the "away" have a miss chance, so you don't always hit the room you wanted (Maybe just have it randomly throw your guys, and have no aiming at all until its level 3), versus the "rescue" having a miss chance. On the defensive side there isn't a lot that can be do...

Honestly, a simple fix could be to have more ships do a FTL jump. That would put the boarding party at serious risk if you leave them for too long. I take a more traditional approach when it comes it upgrades.Typically I get level 2 shields, and afterward save my money until I hit either the exit beacon or a store. The only risk is relying on it too much. An enemy with Rocks, a lvl3 medbay and a repair drone is not going to go down easily no matter how many Mantis you throw at it.
