What does it mean to switch to the appropriate tab? In the top left corner of the window, there are two tabs: "Profile" and "Saved Game". When you intend to edit a profile ("ae_prof.sav"), switch to the "Profile" tab, and click its "Open..." button....

I fixed it! I took all the files from Slipstream out of their folder and mixed them in with the normal FTL files. Bizarre. But congratulations??? Slipstream ought to work from *any* location, and I don't see how FTL's folder would be special. Another reason Slipstream can fail to find its own locat...

Warning: Platforms vary. On Windows, metadata can be embedded inside an exe. On Linux, FTL's got a basic launch script that, in turn, points to 32/64 bit binaries. I don't know if there's even a place for metadata. On OSX, I don't remember what the true executable is, but everything's inside bundle ...
