Zoltan Research Stations also show up in Engi sectors.
Since you can obtain the pod in Pirate/Engi/Rock, Engi is the best thing to shoot for if you want that quest chain.

Depends on my outfit. If I have a teleporter, I avoid Lanius (not pleasant to board) and Rebel (too many Autoships), and favour Nebula and Pirate (good chance of picking up crew). Vulcan is great and what a rare weapon should be. Flashy, powerful game changer... but not always desirable. Making something pedestrian but highly efficient like the Burst Laser 2 rare doesn't fit nearly as well. I don't have a problem with the Flak weapons... their power doesn't seem over the top ...

Hmm, I rate the custom Charge Laser as one of the best weapons in the game and will hold on to it in the vast majority of games. 2 shots for 1 power at its cooldown is respectable already. The option to keep firing single shots is also useful - once enemy shields are down, they won't get up again. D...

Engi B tends to earn well - it can usually achieve crew kills and gets a few blue options. Lack of manpower is a surprisingly small problemin a ship-to-ship shootout if you know which system you need to man at which time. Doing very little if the Heavy Ion misses and being flummoxed by 2 shield bubb...

Start is tough, but this should be expected considering the value down the road:
premium weapon, premium drone, additional drone slot, long-range scanners tend to be good for income.

Of course, a tough start is significant if you normally have things well in hand and expect to win most games...

I've used it as a boarding ship with some success, but boarding drones are fairly weak from my experience. I don't like the Bulwark, but you need missiles OR other weaponry OR another way to win. If you can get some wins by boarding/asphyxiation/medbay hacking/mind control/whatever, missiles become a useful and fairly reliable fallback. Also: People are already complaining that missiles aren't useful enough. The odd high-shield ship makes it nice to have one in reserve.
