If you mean ship systems, that is handled in blueprints.xml - reading and editing that adds a lot of extra overhead since that file is so large. A little hand-editing isn't going to kill you.

This is going to sound like a stupid question, but are you sure your life support room is powered? Jumping into ionstorm nebula sections will mess up your power allotments, and can often result in your life support being shut off. If it's off, then oxygen levels will slowly deplete, even if the room...

The changes I make are so small and the bugs so immediately apparent that the only 'hassle' comes from recompiling and starting the game over and over. Besides, having to upload stuff would add more hassle, not reduce it.
