Unless it is in your oxygen room or medbay, you can just run in, shoot it a few times, heal up, etc... I don't see how you would lose crew to an inactive drone.

Id say don't get teleport unless you have 2 excess crewmembers, meaning 6 total. Preferably some rockmen or mantis in there, too.

Go for normal. It is supposed to be a roguelike, so dieing is part of the learning experience. Once you get a hang of things, the game is generally not that hard.

At least part of your problem might be dealt with by using the restart during the game instead of returning to the Hangar, then you keep your ship and crewnames. But of course that does not really help if you want to play a different ship.
