Just backup the savefile yourself. You can find the save file location in the sticky.

There's your option of saving every step whenever you want.

The good thing is if you did FTL away the ships in the next sector should be able to overwhelm and kill you, thus preventing further stalemates. :)

Well, that ship did just survive and repaired itself to full health after you blew it up....so I guess some leeway is allowed here.

Form 1 doesn't have any special ability though. Totally toothless after you take down all its artillery. Form 2 and 3 has their own "cheat"s.
