My favorite balanced ship is the Red-Tail; boarding is Crystal B over Mantis B, though lockdown is OP. I haven't yet tried Rock B or Slug B, but I don't particularly care for the A versions of either, though I've beaten the game on Normal with them. Stealth ships are also fun and not extremely difficult as I had heard.

My favorite ship would have to be the slug cruiser, both type A and type B. Their uniqueness gives me a feeling of "charm" while flying them. With the Slug A you can pick up extra scrap with very little risk, never having to worry about losing a crewmember due to bad cloak timing or a solar flare. Having a breach bomb is great for flushing people out of their medbays, dropping shields is easy with dual lasers, and the anti-bio beam is just devious. The only part that sucks is the airlock placement (the doors next to the shield room are the only ones it's safe to vent from) and lack of crew early on kind of hurts. However the automatic breach repair and blast doors make it a little easier to deal with the problems you get with little crew.

As for the Slug B, I enjoy the early challenge factor of needing missiles to preform boarding actions, since you don't have a medbay. Slugs may not be the best boarders but I like that, it feels more fun to actually worry about your affectionately named crew instead of the auto win button of the mantis type B. Before you get a medbay and weapon to supplement your artemis you also have to think about whether or not a heal bomb is needed. After you get rolling the healbomb can keep your slugs in the fight, and is a great help against mantis. And strangely the airlock placement is the polar opposite of type A, almost as good as the Kestrel B.

the mantis B, the Basilisk all the way. ('cross the sky)
Layout is nice, starts with 2 shields, has 2 of the 3 buyable systems already... 4 person tele-pad, great that it's right next to the med-bay! you can focus early scrap on valuble upgrades and not on shields... and early on if someone boards you, tele over to them and unlock all the doors >:D. the only thing bad about is is how far the sensors doors and oxegin is from the airlocks. other then that, great drones. oh, and the fact that you have no way of getting rid of medbays sucks, but for a more balanced ship i say i like the mantis A. not all teleporter, and can take away medbays with ok crew.

I don't quite have all the ships yet (I'm getting there). But one I'm fairly fond of is the Crystal ship A. In my first run of the game I ended up getting a Crystal Crew member (and I'm certain the Rock homeworlds were up next but my ship exploded due to reckless newbie tactics), which has only managed to annoy me in the long run as I spent the next 10 or so runs blindly obsessing over the unidentified cruiser, which I could only assume required you to explore uncharted Nebulae.

It might just be because the RNG was messing with at the start of the game or that this is the first thing in a very long time that it truly wants me to have. But yeah. Gems are truly outrageous.

I've been playing FTL nonstop for two months now. Wonderful game. I keep learning new things. So far I have 13 of the 18 ships unlocked, and by now killing the final foozle is trivial. The most important thing to know about that: in stage 2, just leave the boarding robot alone. Let it rampage, and clean up after it leaves a room.

Also, it's always a waste to get 4 shields. Three is all you ever need for the boss.

By far my favorite ship so far is the Rock Cruiser B with EIGHT Rockmen, two Burst Laser II's, the original Artemis missile launcher, and the Pegasus missile launcher--plus THREE Weapon Pre-loaders! I actually got that loadout one time, and it just absolutely chews up anything. Wait until all four weapons are charged, then fire at the shields.

Incidentally, I never use beam weapons (except the artillery beam on the Fed. Cruiser). Too much trouble.

Do u mean 3 auto loaders or 3 preloaders? 3 preloaders gives exactly the same benefits as 1.

actualy if you get 1 pre igniter* after you already have one, your crew breaks it down into scrap. it happended to me when i unlocked the mantis ship. wanna know how much i got? 10. :(
also, the rock cruiser B doesn't start with an artimis. Only the type A does.

Engi Cruiser - Type A

I dunno why, but there's something deeply satisfying about ionising a ship's oxygen systen and watching them die slowly... Very sadistic

My rating would be:

zoltan cruiser A&B
mantis B
Crystal B

Zoltan are just op right from the start, also i love using beams; even thou its harder than just spam burst lasers.

Mantis and crystal B are both 4 man teleport, which is insane.
