Missile Reloading

Postby Dahn » Fri Apr 20, 2012 5:20 pm

Hi all! I love the look of this game and I've watched the vids quite a few times now.
From watch the vids though, something caught my eye and lead me to wonder...

In the vid, when an enemy ship cloaks and your ship is reloading, the reloading process seems to pause while the enemy is cloaked...
Is that intentional? Why?
Surely, the reloading should continue so that you are ready to fire when the target reappears?

It's something that has been bugging me for a while, so I thought I'd ask :)

I believe the reloading continues, but you lose track of the target so the weapons turn auto-fire off.

That makes sense. Is there any indication that you've lost tracking on these things? A grayed-out bar or something would communicate this well.

I stand corrected. See Jason's reply below this post.

Smells like a bug to me.

I played the demo sadly powered up weapons does not charge up or load up :( they only charge up if you target a system on the enemy ship.

If the enemy ship has cloaking tech and cloaks while your charging up a weapon it will fire and miss but not charge up again till you select a new system to attack when it decloaks.

Made fighting the impossible pirate very annoying as that is the only cloaking ship I fought, still i did beat him once :)

I can confirm this to be true, it doesn't make a ton of sense: your ship reloading / power up its weapons shouldn't be dependent on if it can see a target or not...

Maybe it should depend on the type of weapon, I could imagine that some sorts of weapons continuing to hold a charge might be dangerous to your own ship if it were to inadvertently discharge while still in the weapon ;) Yes, I totally just suggested yet another way for the Devs to have us deep six ourselves, you can thank me later :D

Or it was just a undeveloped part of the game the demo we played on onLive was an alpha or early beta so they might have fixed it.

Agreed, I think that you should be able to set you weapons load to power up and not if there is a target on screen or not...

Yes, currently weapons stop charging when enemies are cloaked by design. If we don't, cloaking significantly helps AI opponents when players cloak because they will wait for the player to decloak and fire all weapons at once. It made using cloaking a terrifying prospect.
Of course all this is subject to refinement during testing, but I figured I'd clarify what's in the video.

I can see what you mean, I suppose that you could slow targetting down a bit or something, but I do now see where your coming from, no one would want to uncloak as they would be blown into atoms!
