Conversely if you play till you can play normal no more... then easy will seem VERY easy, possibly.

If you go on easy at the start you will not learn how normal mode works and have trouble once you try it on that difficulty. So it is distinctly up to you.

Enter a Nebula or pay merc's is the best options.

I would love to see a sensor stealth augment that slows the rebel advancement by 7% (5% too low, 10% too hight. ;) ).

The FTL jammer is only good to stop vessels (other than the main boss) from getting away, and the ones that tend to run are the rebels. Other races and pirates tend not to run, but they can. The Reverse Ion Field is great against Engi vessels or some rebel auto scout, but I tend to find teh Boss mis...

Rebel jumping seems to happen in a turn based way not in real time. If I am wrong then staying off pause for 15 minutes the other day means the rebels must have been lost. ;)

If you did not save then at least you have not lost 8 hours worth of game play since the game only gives around 1 hour of single game play. Be glad for that.
